Drawing Owls: Designed for the Dark
A mini course
LESSON 1: SKETCHING OWLS
A wise ornithologist once described the owl as “a cat with wings.” But the tools of this fierce predator’s trade -- powerful talons, lithe body and dagger-sharp beak -- are tucked beneath a soft, rounded mound of feathers. Add the fact that the owl’s upright position, flat face and forward-looking eyes give him an oddly human aspect, and you have all the factors that make him a fascinating subject to draw.
We will begin with a very basic look at creating an accurate owl sketch. Watch the videos all the way through and print the accompanying reference images before you try “putting your owl in a box.”
